Achilleion Palace in Gastouri — the neoclassical villa built in 1890 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria ("Sissi"), and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. A pilgrimage for Sissi fans and Corfu's top museum-house.

Tickets & hours

10 € adult, 5 € student/senior, free under 8. Open daily April–October 08:00–20:00, winter 08:00–15:00. Audio guide 3 € (in 7 languages, recommended — labels are minimal). Buy on site, no advance booking needed.

What you see

Ground floor: Sissi's private chapel, the entrance hall with Achilles statues, dining room with original Habsburg china. First floor: Sissi's bedroom, her Pegasus paintings, Kaiser's office (after 1907 sale). Outside, the famous "Dying Achilles" statue facing the sea and the "Triumphant Achilles" 11 m bronze added by Kaiser.

The gardens

Free if you have the palace ticket. Italianate terraces with views to Pontikonisi and Corfu town. The viewpoint by the Triumphant Achilles is the best photo. Allow 30–40 min for gardens.

How to get there

10 km south of Corfu town, in Gastouri village. Bus 10 from San Rocco square (Corfu town), 2 € one way, 30 min, every 1–2 h. Taxi 18 €. Parking free at palace. Combine with Kanoni (Mouse Island view) on the way back.

Lunch

Tripa Tavern in Kinopiastes (5 km, legendary 200-year-old taverna, 35 €/pax with wine) or Klimataria in Benitses (10 km, fish, 30 €/pax).
