Akrotiri — the "Minoan Pompeii", a Bronze Age city buried (and perfectly preserved) by the Theran volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. Three-storey houses, frescoes, drainage system. Santorini's top cultural sight after Oia sunset.

12 € adult, 6 € reduced. Combined ticket with Ancient Thera + Museum of Prehistoric Thera 14 € (3 days, great value). Open daily 08:00–20:00 (April–October), 08:00–15:00 winter. Closed Tuesdays in low season. Buy online — high season queue 30 min.

What you see

The whole site is covered by a bioclimatic roof — visit any weather. Raised walkways over the streets. Highlights:

  • House of the Ladies — fresco of women.
  • West House — fishermen frescoes (originals in Athens, replicas here).
  • Square of the Mill House — ground floor preserved with pithoi.
  • Triangle Square — main intersection, drainage visible.

1 h self-guided. Audio guide 5 €. Guided tour (30 €/pax, 1 h 30, book online) is worth it.

Practical

40 min drive south from Fira. Free parking. Red Beach is 1 km away — combine. Lunch at The Good Heart Akrotiri village (30 €/pax) or Cinco (Greek tapas, 35 €/pax).

Museum of Prehistoric Thera

In Fira. Houses original Akrotiri frescoes (Spring Fresco, Antelopes). 6 €. Visit AFTER Akrotiri to understand.
