Angelokastro is Corfu's most dramatic fortress — Byzantine ruins on a sheer 305 m cliff above the west coast, with a 360° view from Paleokastritsa to the Albanian mountains. Never conquered in 800 years of sieges.
The castle
Built in the 13th c. by the Komnenos dynasty, last defensive refuge of north Corfu against Ottoman invasions (1571, 1716). Today: ruined walls, two small chapels (one cut into the rock — Agioi Pantes), cisterns, the keep at the summit.
Entry & visit
3 € entry, open daily 08:30-15:30 (closed Tuesday in winter). 15-min climb on a stepped path from the parking — easy for kids, allow water in summer. No shade at the top.
The view
From the summit, on a clear day you see: Paleokastritsa monastery and bays below, Albanian Ceraunian mountains to the east, Corfu's west coast to the south, the open Ionian to the west. Best at sunset.
Access
30 min by car from Corfu town via Krini village. Last 1 km is a narrow paved road through Krini — drive slowly. Free parking at the trailhead.
