Arco Naturale Capri 2027: Natural Arch Walk, Grotta di Matermania & Lunch

The Arco Naturale is Capri's most underrated walk — a massive natural rock arch 200 m above the sea on the east cliff, reached by a quiet 25 min stroll from Capri town.

The walk

From the Piazzetta, follow Via Le Botteghe → Via Croce → Via Matermania (signposted). Mostly flat, then 100 m of stone steps down. 25 min one way. Free, open all day. Wear closed shoes — slippery when wet.

The arch

A 12-m-high prehistoric limestone arch carved by sea erosion when this part of Capri was at water level. Spectacular framed view through the arch onto the Sorrentine peninsula. The lookout has benches — best at sunrise (no crowds, eastern light).

Grotta di Matermania

200 m further along the cliff path — a huge natural sea cave converted into a Roman nymphaeum (Emperor Tiberius' time, free entry). Cool refuge in summer.

Lunch at Le Grottelle

Le Grottelle — Capri's most spectacularly located restaurant, set in a cave with terraces over the arch and the Faraglioni in the distance. Mains 25-40 €, ravioli capresi 18 €, lemon cake 12 €. Reserve. Open lunch only, April to October.

Continue to Punta Tragara

The cliff path continues south past Villa Malaparte to Belvedere di Tragara (the Faraglioni view) — 30 min more walking, the best 2-h loop on Capri.
