How Charterandvillas helps

Our concierge desk has been bundling villas and yachts in the Mediterranean since 2019, and we work in your language with a single point of contact for the entire stay. We quote a closed price that already includes the skipper, end-of-stay cleaning and the first two hours of fuel, so there are no surprises on arrival.

What to ask before you book

  • Real sleeping capacity, not sofa-bed count.
  • Distance and transfer time to the marina and to the nearest beach club.
  • Concierge add-ons: chef, masseuse, in-villa DJ, security.
  • Cancellation window and what triggers the refund.

Tell us your dates and group size and we will send a same-day proposal with two or three matching villas and yachts.

Logistics and Seasonal Planning for South Menorca

Understanding the seasonal rhythm of Menorca is essential for a seamless visit to Cala Macarella. While the peak months of July and August offer the warmest water temperatures (averaging 25°C), they also bring the highest density of visitors. For those seeking the "glass water" effect without the crowds, the shoulder seasons of late May to mid-June and the entirety of September provide a more tranquil experience. During these windows, the Mediterranean sun is potent but the air temperature remains a comfortable 24-27°C, making the 30-minute hike from Cala Galdana significantly more pleasant.

Transportation options vary by budget and preference. While the public bus (Line 69 from Ciutadella) is a sustainable choice, luxury travelers often prefer private transfers or rental vehicles. If you are driving, be aware of the SAPAQUI booking system mentioned previously. If the parking quota is full, do not attempt to park on the roadside; local police (Policía Local) are extremely active in summer and fines for illegal parking in protected natural areas start at €200. The alternative is to utilize the large, free parking area at Cala Galdana and proceed on foot via the Camí de Cavalls (Stage 13 and 14).

Month Avg. Sea Temp Crowd Level Accessibility Note
May 18°C Low Parking usually available without pre-booking.
June 22°C Medium SAPAQUI system begins mid-month.
July/August 25°C Very High Pre-book parking or boat 2 weeks in advance.
September 24°C Medium Ideal for hiking and swimming.
October 21°C Low Susy Restaurant begins seasonal closing.

Sustainable Boating and Coastal Etiquette

Cala Macarella and Macarelleta are part of the Área Natural de Especial Interés (ANEI). This protection is largely due to the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. These underwater forests are responsible for the water's exceptional clarity and oxygenation. It is strictly forbidden to drop anchor directly onto the Posidonia. When chartering a yacht, ensure your skipper uses the designated ecological mooring buoys. These red or white buoys are managed by the Balearic government to prevent anchor dragging which destroys the seabed. The cost is approximately €25-€40 per day depending on the vessel's length, and they should be reserved via the Ports IB website during high season.

On land, the "Leave No Trace" policy is strictly enforced. There are no trash bins on the actual sand of Macarelleta to discourage pests and prevent wind-blown litter. Visitors must carry all waste back to the main bins located near the Macarella parking area or the restaurant. Additionally, while the path between the two coves is well-trodden, straying from the marked trails causes soil erosion and damages endemic flora like the Balearic sea lavender. Stick to the wooden boardwalks and stone-lined paths.

Essential Packing List for the South Coast

The lack of commercial development at these coves means you must arrive fully prepared. Unlike the beaches in Mallorca or Ibiza, there are no sun loungers or parasols for rent on the sand at Macarella. If you are not arriving by a yacht equipped with a bimini top, shade is non-existent. Overexposure is a frequent issue for tourists who underestimate the Balearic UV index, which often reaches 9 or 10 in July.

  • Footwear: While flip-flops are fine for the sand, the 1.5 km hike from Cala Galdana or the 10-minute scramble to Macarelleta requires sturdy sandals with straps or lightweight sneakers. The limestone rocks can be sharp and slippery.
  • Hydration: Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person. While Restaurant Susy sells beverages, the walk back to the car or the next cove in 30°C heat requires immediate access to fluids.
  • Snorkeling Gear: The rocky perimeter of Macarelleta is home to vibrant marine life, including ornate wrasse and octopus. High-quality masks are rarely available for purchase nearby; bring your own.
  • Dry Bag: If you plan to swim from a chartered boat to the shore, a small 5L or 10L dry bag is essential for keeping your phone, camera, and dry clothes safe.
  • Cash: While the restaurant accepts cards, the signal in the limestone canyon can be intermittent. Having €40-€50 in cash for small purchases is a prudent backup.

Alternative Coves to Avoid the Crowds

If the 09:00 parking quota for Macarella is already met, or if you prefer a more secluded atmosphere, the southern coast offers several "hidden" alternatives accessible via the same Camí de Cavalls path or by private boat. These spots offer similar turquoise waters but with significantly fewer day-trippers.

Cala Mitjana and Mitjaneta

Located about 20 minutes east of Cala Galdana by boat, or a 20-minute walk from its own dedicated parking lot on the Me-22 road. It features a wide bay with deep water, perfect for jumping from the surrounding 5-meter cliffs. It lacks any facilities, so it feels more rugged than Macarella.

Cala Trebalúger

Accessible only by a 40-minute hike from Cala Mitjana or by boat. Because of the effort required to reach it, Trebalúger remains one of the most peaceful beaches on the island even in August. A small freshwater river flows into the sea here, creating a unique ecosystem where the pine trees grow right to the water's edge.

Cala Escorxada

The ultimate "secret" beach for those with a private charter. It is nearly impossible to reach on foot during the heat of the day (over an hour hike), making it an exclusive haven for yachts. The sand is exceptionally white, and the water is shallow for a long distance, making it ideal for paddleboarding.

Sample One-Day South Coast Itinerary

To maximize your experience, we recommend a "land and sea" combination. This allows you to experience the iconic views from the cliffs and the luxury of a private deck.

  1. 08:30: Arrive at Cala Galdana. Park in the public lot near the Audax Hotel.
  2. 09:00: Hike the Camí de Cavalls toward Macarella. The morning light is perfect for photography, and the air is still cool.
  3. 09:30: Quick swim at Macarelleta before the first excursion boats arrive from Ciutadella.
  4. 11:00: Meet your private yacht charter at the mouth of the bay (pre-arranged pickup via tender).
  5. 11:30 - 13:30: Cruise east toward Cala Trebalúger and Cala Fustam. Enjoy snorkeling in areas inaccessible to the public.
  6. 14:00: Lunch on board or head back to Restaurant Susy for a traditional seafood paella (expect a 20-minute wait for a table).
  7. 16:00: Siesta on the yacht's shaded deck while the midday sun is at its peak.
  8. 17:30: Final swim at Cala Mitjana as the day-trippers begin to head back to their hotels.
  9. 19:00: Return to the marina in time for sunset drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Macarelleta really clothing-optional?

Yes. While Menorca as a whole is very relaxed, Macarelleta is one of the island's primary nudist-friendly spots. There is no "official" side, but the ends of the beach furthest from the entry path are where you will typically find naturists. Respectful behavior is expected from all visitors.

Can I bring a drone?

No. Most of the south coast coves fall under protected airspace or are within the 8km radius of Menorca Airport's controlled zone. Furthermore, flying drones over crowds in a natural park is strictly prohibited and can result in significant fines and confiscation of equipment.

Are there jellyfish?

The presence of Pelagia noctiluca (Mauve Stinger) depends entirely on the wind. If the wind is blowing from the south (Migjorn), jellyfish may be pushed into the coves. Local apps like "Medusa Menorca" provide daily updates on sightings. If you see purple flags at managed beaches, use caution.

Is the water safe for children?

The water at Macarella is very shallow and calm, with almost no current, making it excellent for children. However, the trek to get there can be exhausting for toddlers. If traveling with young children, arriving by boat is the only recommended method to avoid the heat of the trail.

"The true luxury of Menorca isn't found in high-rise beach clubs, but in the silence of a pine-fringed cove at 8:00 AM, before the first boat breaks the surface of the water."
