The old town

Sant'Antonio Abate cathedral
Perched on the cliff edge — the 13th-c. bell tower with majolica dome is the village's symbol. Crypt with frescoes. Free entry.
Elephant Rock (Roccia dell'Elefante)
5 km south on the SS134 — a 4 m volcanic boulder eroded into the perfect shape of an elephant, with prehistoric burial chambers (domus de janas) carved inside. Free, photo stop.

Il Cormorano (seafood, mains 22-35 €, terrace over harbour), Da Ugo (Sardinian classics, 18-28 €), La Trattoria (pizza and pasta, 12-18 €). Try aragosta alla castellanese (lobster stew).

Free parking at the lower town (Piazza Pianedda), then 5 min walk up. 40 min from Alghero airport.
