Fort Antoine Monaco 2027: Open-Air Theatre, Rampart Walk & Free Sunset
Fort Antoine is Monaco's best free sunset spot — an 18th-c. coastal fortress on the eastern tip of the Rocher, converted into an open-air theatre by Prince Rainier III in 1953. Free to visit, with the best panorama of Port Hercule.
The fort
Built 1709-1713 by Antoine I of Monaco to defend the principality from naval attack, the star-shaped fort still has its original cannons and powder magazines. Free entry, open daily from 9:00 to dusk. The terrace gives the postcard view of Port Hercule, the Rocher, the Tête de Chien and the Italian Riviera in the distance.
Open-air theatre
Every summer (mid-July to mid-August), the inner courtyard hosts the Théâtre du Fort Antoine season — Monaco's most atmospheric cultural event. Free admission, capacity 350, contemporary drama and music. Bookings open in June (monaco.mc).
The rampart walk
From the Place du Palais, walk east along the rampart promenade (Avenue Saint-Martin) — 15 min, free, all flat. You pass the cathedral, the Oceanographic Museum, the exotic Saint-Martin gardens (free) and arrive at Fort Antoine. Best done at 19:00 in summer (light, cooler, sunset over Monaco).
Combine with
Saint-Martin gardens (free, on the way), Oceanographic Museum (18 €, 5 min back), Place du Palais for the 11:55 changing of the guard (free, 10 min walk).
Parking
Parking des Pêcheurs (3 €/h, lift up to the Rocher). Free access by bus 1 or 2 from Monte Carlo (Saint Martin stop). No cars on the Rocher.
Stay in a villa in Cap d'Ail or Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and combine with a private boat from Port Hercule along the Riviera.
