Mahón (Maó) — Menorca's capital, sitting over a 5 km-long natural inlet often cited as the world's second largest natural harbour (after Pearl Harbor) — and the deepest in the Mediterranean.

Harbour boat tour

La Mola Fortress

Imposing 19th-c sea fortress at the harbour mouth. 8 € entry, open 10:00–20:00 summer. Brutal architecture, panoramic ramparts and a 9-inch Vickers gun.

Old town

Plaça d'Espanya (fish market), Carrer Nou (shopping), Església Santa Maria (huge organ concerts daily 13:00, free). Lunch: Es Tast de na Sílvia (Michelin Bib Gourmand, 35 €/pax). Drinks at Aqua on the quay.

Mahonesa

Yes — mayonnaise was reputedly invented here in 1756 during French occupation. Try authentic versions at any harbour restaurant.
