Place des Lices is Saint-Tropez's beating heart — a vast square shaded by century-old plane trees, host to a famous Provençal market and a daily pétanque ritual played by locals and celebrities alike.
Market days
Tuesday and Saturday mornings (8:00-13:00, year-round). 100+ stalls: lavender and Provençal olive oil, fresh produce, espadrilles, antiques, linen. Get there before 10:00 in August — it's packed.
Pétanque
The gravel pitch on the square sees daily games from 17:00. Café des Arts (Le Café) lends boules to customers — order a pastis (8 €) and join in. Locals and visiting celebrities mix freely.
Cafés around the square
Café des Arts / Le Café (the classic, mains 22-38 €), Sénéquier red awnings (port-side, coffee 6 €, but more for the scene than the food), La Tarte Tropézienne original shop (the cream cake invented for Brigitte Bardot, 6.50 €).
Parking
Parking des Lices underground, 2.50 €/h, 30 €/day. Free in low season.
